Manuel Felguerez (1928-2020)
Planeta de piel y piedras, 1991
Oil on canvas
39.5 in x 47 in
Born in San Agustin Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Felguerez is one of the most
important exponents of abstract art in Mexico. From 1947 to 1952 he
lived in Paris, studying at the Academy of the Grande Chaumiere; he
also studied sculpture with Ossip Zadkine and Constantin Brancusi.
Upon his return to Mexico City in 1953, he studied with Francisco Zuniga.
Felguerez's work includes a number of highly abstract sculptures,
stained glass, and murals that he created with found objects. Most of
his geometric paintings preserve figurative elements pointing to the
dualism between order and disorder that characterizes his entire oeuvre.
